Later Sonnet (Edwin Denby)

In ahotelroom a madman
Breaks offarmchair leg, brains me
Asleep;clever Paris surgeon
Extractsstomach; been killed nearly
Who hasn’t,the much worse rents of love
Even of selfesteemsurvived
Leftshamefully but glad to still live
Watch therich hide, watch the poor hide
Death’sdread; trapped when I turn toward friends
Long deadwhen I found them, poets
Who when I’mcrazed give my heart strength
By their toneof voice they do it
Some of theirdeath-dread can be shook
Jumpingacross, eyes read a book
