FALCIANO DEL MASSICO,Italy -

The mayor of a smalltown in southern Italy has forbidden residents to die, because there is nocemetery for them to be buried in.

Giulio Cesare Fava, themayor of Falciano del Massico, located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north ofNaples, southern Italy, issued the order earlier this month stating, "itis forbidden for residents ... to go beyond the boundaries of earthly life, togo into to the afterlife."

So far only tworesidents have disobeyed the edict, La Stampa daily reported, with two recordeddeaths since March 5.

The unusual orderfollows a dispute with a neighboring town, which has owned the old cemeterysince local boundaries were redrawn in 1964. The two communities disagree abouta planned expansion of the site, so Fava pulled out of the project and decidedto build a new cemetery for Falciano del Massico's living 4,000 residents.

But until he gains theright permits and builds the new final resting place, the townsfolk have beenordered to keep on living.
